Why is the compiled kernel called actually vmlinuz?
The kernel binary of old AT&T versions was called 'unix'. As Berkeley wrote a new kernel with virtual memory, it was named 'vmunix'. Thus the Linux kernel had to be called vmlinux. The packed (zipped) version was called vmlinuz. |
